    WHAT WE DO.

    UNDERSTANDING BASIC UV-C TERMS

COMMON BACTERIA AND GERMS THAT UV-C IS KNOWN TO INACTIVATE

COMMON BACTERIA AND GERMS THAT UV-C IS KNOWN TO INACTIVATE

    1. UV-C: A type of ultraviolet (UV) radiation with a wavelength between 100 and 280 nanometers. It's known for its germicidal properties, meaning it can inactivate bacteria and viruses in the air and on surfaces. While naturally occurring UV-C from the sun is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere, there are artificial UV-C sources that produce 253.7 nm for disinfection purposes.
    2. UV INTENSITY (I) = energy per unit surface area
    3. EXPOSURE TIME (T) = exposure time in seconds
    4. UV DOSE (FLUENCE) =  Intensity (I) x Time (T) expressed as mJ/cm2
    5. mJ/cm2 =  milli (m) one thousandth, Joule (J) a unit of energy, per ( / ), square centimeter (cm2). Used in measuring the amount of UV energy received by a surface area.
    6. .LOG REDUCTION =  percentage of microorganisms inactivated; log 1 = 90%, log 2 = 99%, log 3 = 99.9%, log 4 = 99.99%, log 5 = 99.999% and log 6 = 99.9999%.

    • UV-C dosage: Target 50 mJ/cm2 to deactivate the average bacteria/virus at log 3.

    UV-C EQUIPMENT WE USE:

    • 1 x Tool Klean UVC Industrial Whole Room Sanitizer w/Philips Bulbs.
    • 2 x UV Sanitizer Lamp - 100W Stainless Steel Whole Room Sanitizer.
    • 1 x  UV FAB - TruClean 400 Handheld UV Sanitizer.
    • Dosimeter cards.

COMMON BACTERIA AND GERMS THAT UV-C IS KNOWN TO INACTIVATE

    1. Campylobacteriosis: A bacterial infection causing diarrheal illness.
    2. Human coronaviruses that cause the Common Cold (HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43) and Influenza A virus (H1N1).
    3. Salmonella: A bacterium known to cause food borne illness.
    4. SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
    5. Shigellosis: A bacterial infection of the intestines, leading to diarrhea and fever.
    6. Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis): A disease caused by a fungus in the soil of certain areas, including Southern California. Infections occur when individuals breathe in the fungal spores, causing respiratory symptoms. Cases have been on the rise in California, potentially due to wildfires, climate change and dust storms.
    7. West Nile Virus: A mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever, headaches, and in some cases, serious neurological problems.

    Important Notes:

    • Wildfire smoke can carry harmful microbes long distances in smoke plumes and potentially cause infections in humans.
    • UV-C light sanitation is a powerful tool used inside spaces to neutralize airborne and surface pathogens. But it should not be seen as a replacement for regular cleaning practices, more of a supplement. It's most effective when used after (within 24 hours) traditional cleaning methods.
    • Pathogens are constantly trying to survive. UV-C light sanitation should be done on a regular basis, similar to cleaning, you can't just clean a ,space once.

HOW TO SCHEDULE UV-C LIGHT SANITATION AND WHAT WE DO

COMMON BACTERIA AND GERMS THAT UV-C IS KNOWN TO INACTIVATE

HOW TO SCHEDULE UV-C LIGHT SANITATION AND WHAT WE DO

HOW TO PREPARE AND SCHEDULE:  UV-C light sanitation is best done, after a cleaning. Before we arrive, ensure that any fragile paintings and plants are moved out of the area you want UV-C light sanitized. Any too large to move please let us know ahead of time. We don't guarantee full protection, but we can bring coverings to help. Also your animals cannot be in the area, so plan to have them elsewhere or with you. You and your family or employees will have to be outside during the UV-C sanitation of the space(s) is occurring.

It has been often noticed by many users over the years that whenever a germicidal UV surface disinfection (UV-C) is performed in a room, there is almost always a strange odor left afterward. It is not the smell of ozone, it is more like a slightly pungent smell similar to rotten eggs or burnt hair.  After several tests and experiments, it was found that airborne dust in homes, offices, and other human environments typically contains up to 80% of dead human skin. The main constituent of human skin is a molecular group called keratin. Keratin encloses large amounts of the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine. When high energy UV-C light photons hit a keratin/cysteine molecule, they have enough power to break their internal chemical bonds and shatter them into many smaller molecules. The pungent smell is due to the sulfur by-products of this.

The smell after UV-C sanitation is generally not harmful, though some people may find it unpleasant. While the smell itself isn't dangerous, we ventilate the area after sanitation. We understand that a clean room should smell clean. If you find this smell too distracting, it has been found that lavender or eucalyptus essential oils gently misted into the air can help mitigate the smell. You may request this at no extra charge after the sanitation process. Just let us know upon booking, and include which one of the essential oils  you would like us to use.

The intensity of the odor should decrease significantly within a few minutes to a couple of hours. The exact duration varies, based on ventilation of the space and individual sensitivity to the smell. We provide a free option of aromatic mist spray (lavender or eucalyptus) after service to help mitigate the smell.
